Reading that advert, what the NRM is really wanting is a time served fitter/machinist and not a Professional Mechanical Engineer. People in this country seem unable to differentiate between them.

Not getting at you, Anthony. It's a thing most professional Engineers have about peoples perception of what they are. A professional Engineer's tools are generally a desk, phone, PC and pen & paper. He'll probably wear a suit rather than a boiler suit and be looking at a salary twice that which the NRM are offering.

It's even more annoying when people advertise for a Mechanical Engineer when they're looking for a car mechanic!
Moan over.

You could get me going on this as well. In the UK the profession of Engineer has been allowed to devalue.

In most other European countries I have worked once you confirm that you are a professional engineer the elevation in staus can be quite disconcerting. When I worked in the deep South of Italy everbody insisting on calling me Engineer Parker and using very formal language and titles. It took me a while to get my team to call me by my first name and quiet a few still called me Engineer Adrian.

Like all things there is a time and a place for titles and status. Status is part of respect and it has to be earned. I have many pieces of paper with various qualifications and initials after my name but they are mostly irrelevant when you are working as part of a team.
